7 dog-approved ways to beat the heat

When hot weather puts a damper on your dog’s usual play and exercise routines, what’s a pet parent to do? Here are our favorite ideas to keep the fun going when you’re stuck inside together.

1. Take the party inside

Some classic dog activities work just as well inside as out! Keep your fur pal entertained with an indoor game of tug-of-war or fetch (just choose a softer toy or ball so nothing gets broken). If you’re a gadget-lover, let an iFetch do the throwing for you; you can even teach your dog to put the ball back in! For even more of a workout, take the game to a flight of stairs. Even high-energy doggos will get tuckered out as they clamber up and down.

2. Work on commands

Use a sweltering day to brush up on obedience, or teach your dog something new while staying indoors. Work on a behavior you’ve been meaning to reinforce (coming when called, staying put when the doorbell rings, or trick training). Roll over! Play dead! Spin!

3. Get creative with obstacles

Something as simple as a kitchen chair, a couple of treats and some up/down commands can keep your dog entertained and boost brain power. Or why not make an obstacle course incorporating boxes, cushions, brooms… whatever you have kicking around. With a bit of guidance, you can get your dog jumping, army crawling and more. You can even train your dog to walk on a treadmill!

4. Give your dog a job

Dogs are naturals when it comes to moving things around, so try teaching your dog to put toys in a container or empty a backpack. Searching is another great occupation for curious canines. Hide your dog’s snacks or treats in different rooms while they stay lying down. Then say “Find it!” and watch as they play canine detective with their noses. A puzzle toy or interactive feeder is another way to keep your dog busy and agile, and engage their natural instincts to work.

5. Just add water

Get out the hose or sprinkler and play! Throw your dog’s favorite toys into a plastic kiddie pool and let the splashing begin! If your dog isn’t great with water, maybe today’s the day to gently introduce them to it. Remember to have a treat ready for when they successfully get their paws wet.

6. Go for an air-conditioned walk

Need anything from the hardware store? Now’s the time to head to a dog-friendly store with air conditioning! Dogs who enjoy field trips and car rides will love this, and you can actually get a fairly good walk in as you stroll along the aisles. Bonus: the sights, sounds, and smells of a busy store provide mental stimulation as well as physical exercise.

7. Make a date

Bust boredom at a doggy playgroup or training class. Other people and dogs can provide lots of helpful stimulation and socialization, and attending a playdate can be a great way to burn off energy. Plus, another dog owner might have a better setup to beat the heat… who do you know with a big basement?
